Description

The Primitivo, whose name has a traditional meaning and was handed down by farmers in the region, cleared the coveted “Tre biccieri” of the Gambero Rosso 2018 with the 2013 vintage. The grapes for the production of Primitivo come from the best or oldest vineyards of Tenuta Viglione and are selectively picked by hand every year according to rigorous standards. The Primitivo matures for twenty-four months in traditional, large wooden barrels made from Slavonian oak and is refined for a further four months in French barriques, followed by a six-month bottle storage period.

Our food recommendation:

Hearty, hearty dishes go well with the Primitivo. Try a pot roast made from a fresh leg of lamb. For the preparation of the sauce, use a substantial meat broth or a strong roast stock, lots of onions, plenty of garlic, tomato paste, fresh tomatoes, a dash of this Primitivo and Mediterranean herbs. We recommend grilled vegetables and rosemary potatoes as side dishes.

Wine description

The introduction of the Primitivo grape variety in Apulia and Gioia del Colle in the 12th century is thanks to monks of the Benedictine order. They found the optimal climatic conditions in the region and the most suitable soil for the grape variety. The grapes for the Marpione Riserva are grown according to controlled organic guidelines On arrival at the winery, they are destemmed, gently pressed and carefully processed. The aging takes place first in steel tanks and later in various oak barrels. The expansive bouquet of the 2013 vintage is magnificent and remarkably beautiful. In the immediately delighted nose, one experiences the bewitching scent of ripe plums, dark forest berries and dried fruits, including figs and dates. A subtle earthy note, hints of blackberry jam, tart chocolate, exotic pepper and liquorice aromas flank the fruity perceptions. The powerful Primitivo Riserva is soft and meaty, due to its full body, with fine tannins and good texture. The velvety red wine runs opulently over the tongue and is a lot of fun right from the start. The maripone does not show itself with overripe or cooked fruit, as can be found in comparable wines. No, it shines with juicy, dense and fresh fruit notes that taste like plums and blackberries, which end in a long, warm finish with sweetish-tart aromas, similar to those of a candy with the taste of black currants, combined with the best liquorice. Delicious culinary delicacies await you.
