Description

Negroamaro (rarely Negro Amaro) is a red wine variety native to southern Italy. It is grown almost exclusively in Puglia and particularly in Salento, the peninsula that can be represented as the “heel” of Italy. The grape can produce very colorful wines. Wines from Negroamaro have a very rustic character and combine perfume with an earthy bitterness. The grape produces some of the best red wines in Puglia, especially when mixed with the highly fragrant Malvasia Nera, as in the case of Salice Salentino.

While Negro comes from an Italian and Latin word that means “black”, there is some disputes over whether Amaro comes from the Italian word for “bitter” or whether it is derived from the ancient Greek Mavro, which means “black”. [1] [2] While Negro comes from an Italian and Latin word that means “black”, there is some disputes over whether Amaro comes from the Italian word for “bitter” or whether it is derived from the ancient Greek Mavro, which means “black”. Horace and other Roman writers mention “mera tarantina” from Taranto, and Pliny the Elder describes Manduria as viticulosa (full of vineyards). But after the fall of the Roman Empire, winemaking declined until it remained alive only in the monasteries – Benedictines in Murgia and Greek Orthodox in Salento. Negroamaro could be the grape used in Merum, or it could have been brought in by traders from the home of winemaking in Asia Minor at some point in the past 8,000 years.

Negroamaro precoce was recently identified as a clone in its own right. The RAPD analysis suggests that the variety is closely related to Verdicchio (Verdeca) and Sangiovese. The grapes are used exclusively for winemaking. Although 100% varietal wines are made, Negroamaro is more commonly used as the dominant ingredient in a blend, including varieties like Malvasia Nera, Sangiovese, or Montepulciano. These wines are red or sometimes rosato and are usually still; although both red and rosato versions can be frizzante.
